Pongamia pinnata

Pongamia pinnata, also known as Indian beech or Pongam tree, is a species of legume tree in the Fabaceae family. It is native to India, but can also be found in other parts of Southeast Asia and Australia.

The seeds of Pongamia pinnata are rich in oil, which has a variety of industrial and medicinal uses. The oil is used in the production of biofuels, as it contains high levels of a non-edible oil called pongamia oil. Pongamia oil is also used in the manufacture of soaps, candles, and other household items.

In traditional medicine, various parts of the Pongamia pinnata tree have been used for the treatment of a variety of ailments, including skin disorders, fever, and digestive problems. The tree contains several bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and alkaloids, which are believed to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

The Pongamia pinnata tree is also used in agroforestry systems, as it can improve soil fertility and provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock. It is also used in landscaping and reforestation efforts, as it can tolerate a range of soil types and is drought-resistant.
